What is home insurance?

Home Insurance provides financial cover for your home’s exterior and interior, plus all your belongings, providing peace of mind and saving you from a major financial shock if disaster strikes.

You can choose between 3 types of policies:

  • Buildings Insurance
  • Contents Insurance
  • Combined Buildings and Contents Insurance

How does it work?

Buildings insurance covers the structure of your property, including the roof, foundations, walls and windows.

You are also covered for permanent fittings such as, a fitted kitchen or bathroom suite.

Contents insurance covers all your valuables in the event of loss, accidental damage or theft. You can also cover damage to personal items outside of your control from floods, storms, theft, fires, subsidence and water leaks. In addition can insure valuable items like jewellery, bicycles, laptops etc in and away from the home.

You can also choose a policy option to protect the physical structure of your building – for example covering how much it would actually cost to rebuild your house, if it was completly destroyed.

You can also opt to cover how much money you’d need to replace all the belongings in your property.

Manor Financial policies even allow you to add useful extras such as legal expenses cover, for events like disputes with neighbours.

These optional extras will affect your monthly premiums. However as these are add ons you are completely in control of which ones you want to add.

Why take out a home insurance policy?

Mortgage – If you are applying for mortgage you won’t be accepted unless you have a valid building insurance policy in place. If you’ve had a mortgage for a while you should still have building cover because if disaster strikes, you don’t want to be left massively out of pocket, due to lack of cover.

Your Belongings – It’s important to have cover for your personal belongings. This will protect them against theft, fire, floods etc. You also have the option to insure expensive items such as your bike, laptop and engagement ring away from the home.

  • Your Location
  • Previous home insurance claims you’ve made in the last five or ten years

FAQs

For home insurance policy

It depends on the policy, and your situation. For example, if you are applying for a mortgage, the lender might require that you have building cover in place before they grant the mortgage. You don’t have to take out contents cover, but its recommended to have cover in place for your belongings.
You wouldn’t need buildings cover, this should be provided by the homeowner. However, it would be beneficial to have contents insurance so that if there were any issues, all of your contents are protected.
Buildings cover will protect the actual building (bricks and mortar) if there is any damage to the property. Whereas contents insurance will protect all of your belongings within your home in case something happened, such as, you are broken into, your home is flooded, a fire occurs and your contents are stolen or damaged.
